Dollarama is now selling a collapsible over-the-sink colander for $5, a fraction of the price of the popular Starfrit model. The Starfrit version lists for $21.99 on Canadian Tire and $19.97 on Amazon Canada.
The Dollarama product, labelled Rama Design, reproduces the same basic concept: a rectangular colander that expands to fit over a sink and collapses flat for storage. At full extension it reaches about 24 inches.
What the Dollarama colander offers
The $5 model expands to span a sink, holds pasta and produce for rinsing and has a collapsible body for compact storage. It is marked dishwasher safe, and its handles rest on the sink rim to keep the basket suspended while you drain.
How it compares to the Starfrit model
Functionally the two products are similar: both expand to sit over a sink and fold down for storage. The most important difference is hole placement. The Dollarama colander has perforations on the bottom only, while the Starfrit model has draining holes along the sides and the bottom. That difference can affect how quickly water clears and how effectively small items drain.
Price is the other big distinction. At $5 the Dollarama option is roughly $15 cheaper than the Amazon price and nearly $17 cheaper than the Canadian Tire listing. The Starfrit collapsible colander also carries a strong customer rating, which reflects user experience with durability and design over time.
What to consider before buying
- Hole placement: bottom-only holes drain more slowly and can trap tiny food particles. If you rinse quinoa or small berries, side holes are preferable.
- Sink width: measure your sink before buying. The Dollarama model expands to about 24 inches, but not every sink rim or faucet layout will accommodate it.
- Material and durability: lower price often means thinner plastic. Inspect handles and folding joints for sturdiness before purchase.
- Cleaning: while the label may say dishwasher safe, check seams and hinges for food residue that can collect over time.
- Availability: Dollarama stock varies by store. You may need to check multiple locations.
Where to find it and pricing notes
The Rama Design colander was available at Dollarama for $5 at the time of reporting. The Starfrit collapsible over-the-sink colander was listed for $21.99 on Canadian Tire and $19.97 on Amazon Canada. Prices and availability can change, and taxes and fees may not be included.
If you want the low-cost option, visiting a Dollarama in person is the most reliable way to confirm stock and inspect build quality. If you prefer a branded model with established customer reviews, the Starfrit option remains widely available online and in stores.
Quick buying tips
- Try expanding and collapsing the colander in-store to check the hinge action.
- Test how water drains in the display if possible, or inspect hole placement carefully.
- Consider what you typically drain: small grains and berries benefit from side drainage.
- Keep your receipt in case you need to return the item.
Bottom line: Dollarama’s collapsible colander offers the main features of the Starfrit-style design at a much lower price, with trade-offs in drainage pattern and possibly long-term durability. For the money it is a practical value buy, but shoppers who prioritise faster draining and a known brand may still opt for the Starfrit model.
